Read Psalm 144 or Listen to Psalm 144
Our God is so personal and I love how King David expresses this in Psalm 144. He lists all the things that God is to him and, friends, God is to us those very same things.
Here is David’s list. Which one(s) do you need to be reminded of today?
My Rock
My Loving God
My Fortress
My Stronghold
My Deliver
My Shield
David in writing this Psalm reminds himself all the things God is to him. And what was David facing? He pours each one out to God in this Psalm as well and note some he even lists twice. Don’t we have things like that too? What are you facing today? Which truth of God do you need to cling to?
Here is David’s list of concerns.
War, Fighting, Subduing People, Deliverance from great waters, People who speak lies against him, the sword,
What is your list? Share it with your personal God.
And what else did David do as evidenced in the Psalm? David reminds himself of the truths of God as well and how God has saved him in the past. God can come down and physically deliver David – lightning and smoke, arrows, and reaching down from on high to deliver and rescue David personally in battle. This Psalm shows how well David knows his God, how personal He is, and how He can deliver and rescue HIm.
Where has God helped you in the past? What is your list of deliverance and rescues? May I challenge you to take a few minutes and remember them and even write them down like David did. What a beautiful way to strengthen your faith and savor in God’s incredible love personally to you.
King David also lists a couple other things he did. In verse 2 David says he takes refuge in God. What does that mean to take refuge in God? A refuge is a safe place of shelter from danger. Notice David didn’t turn to himself or others, to food, distraction, or entertainment. David faced his battles and trusted in the LORD as his refuge. This is an intentional choice David made. Have you done this? Are you doing this?
Another action David intentional does is he chooses to sing a new song of praise to God recounting how God alone gives victory. How powerful it is to sing a song of praise in the midst of a personal storm or in David’s case battles from many fronts. What battles are you facing today? Are you intentionally turning to your personal God with a new song of praise? How do you think this may help you today as you face your battles from many fronts? Your battles may look different than King David, but the same God who was David’s personal refuge can be yours too. Will you answer His invitation to pour out your heart to Him and grow in trust and praise in all circumstances?
May our good and gracious God bless you abundantly as you seek Him.
